Mesabi Range

Low hills in Itasca and St Louis counties, Minnesota, about 130 km/81 mi in length. Since the late 19th century the district has been important for the production of iron, but supplies of high-grade ore are gradually being exhausted. Lower-grade ores (taconite) are treated nearby to remove impurities before being shipped to the blast furnaces of the Great Lakes region.
