Messene

Capital of the Greek region Messenia, in the southwestern Peloponnese, founded by the Theban general Epaminondas in 369 BC to check the power of Sparta.

Messene lay at the foot of the ancient stronghold of Mount Ithome, on top of which was the citadel. There are remains of the walls, theatre, stadium, council house, and gateway of the agora. The site is now occupied by the village of Mauromati.
