Messier catalogue

In astronomy, catalogue of 103 galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters (the Messier objects) published in 1784 by French astronomer Charles Messier. Catalogue entries are denoted by the prefix ‘M’. Well-known examples include M31 (the Andromeda galaxy), M42 (the Orion nebula), and M45 (the Pleiades star cluster).

Messier compiled the catalogue to identify fuzzy objects that could be mistaken for comets. The list was later extended to 109.

Each Messier object is accompanied by a spectacular amateur photograph in colour; some of the best of the objects have historical drawings too, and some have drawings by Stoyan himself.
The "phantom" tag is because it is the hardest of the 110 Messier objects to spot without professional equipment.
