Messina

City and port in northeastern Sicily; population (2001) 252,000. It produces soap, olive oil, wine, and pasta. Originally an ancient Greek settlement (Zancle), it was taken first by Carthage and then by Rome. It was rebuilt after an earthquake in 1908.
