Mestre

Town in Veneto region, northeast Italy; population (1987 est) 184,000. A mainland northwestern suburb of Venice, Mestre (with Porto Marghera) forms a large industrial town, and there are metallurgical, chemical, and engineering plants. It is an major road and rail junction, at the end of the causeway that carries both routes to Venice.

Porto Marghera handles 10% of Italy's seaborne cargo; much of Venice's erosion and subsidence has been due to the development of this port, and water extraction for the town.
