Mestrovic, Ivan

Meštrović, Ivan (1883-1962)

Yugoslav sculptor. He created a series of monumental works with strongly nationalistic themes, such as Bishop Strossmayer (1926). His Self-Portrait in Plaster (1915) is in the Tate Gallery, London.

After studying in Vienna, Austria, and then in Paris, France, where he absorbed Auguste Rodin's influence, Meštrović returned to Yugoslavia. He emigrated 1946 and spent the rest of his life in the USA. His portraits include busts of Rodin, US president Herbert Hoover, and Pope Pius XI.
