Metallica| US heavy metal band who, in the 1980s, succeeded in bringing ‘thrash’ rock music to the mainstream while still maintaining credibility with their fan-base. Their 1991 album Metallica was an international success, selling over seven million copies in the USA alone. |
| Formed in 1981 in Los Angeles, California, the band's original line-up was James Hetfield (1963– , vocals, guitar), Kirk Hammett (1962– , guitar), Lars Ulrich (1962– , drums), and Cliff Burton (1962–86, bass). The band's debut album, Kill 'Em All (1983), was followed by Ride the Lightning (1984), but the band's break through album was Master of Puppets (1986). The success of this album was marred by the death of Burton in a tour bus crash; he was replaced on the bass guitar by Jason Newsted (1963– ), who left the bank in 2001. The 1996 album Load was met with a mixed reception, as the band moved into a more alternative style of rock. Reload was released in 1997. |
