Metamorphosen

Study in C minor for 23 solo strings by Strauss; composed in 1945 in response to the wartime devastation of Europe, in particular the destruction of the opera houses, in which his works were performed throughout World War II. It was dedicated to Paul Sacher and the Collegium Musicum and first performed in Zurich on 25 January 1946.
