metastasis

Spread of a malignant tumour from its original site. During metastasis, tumour cells become detached and enter blood or lymphatic vessels, travelling to other parts of the body. The pattern of the spread can be predicted to a certain degree because of this: many cancers spread to the lungs where most deoxygenated blood is returned, whereas intestinal cancers usually spread first to the liver.
