Metaxas, Ioannis (1870–1941)

Greek general and politician, born in Ithaca. He restored George II (1890–1947) as king of Greece, under whom he established a dictatorship as prime minister from 1936, and introduced several necessary economic and military reforms. He led resistance to the Italian invasion of Greece in 1941, refusing to abandon Greece's neutral position.
