Meteosat

Series of weather satellites launched by the European Space Agency (ESA) into geostationary orbit 36,000 km/22,400 mi above the coast of Africa, from where detailed images of weather systems are transmitted to ground stations. Meteosat 7 was launched in 1997. The first of ESA's upgraded Meteosat Second Generation (MSG-1, later renamed to Meteosat 8) was first launched in August 2002. The satellites are now operated by a consortium called Eumetsat.
