Methuen, Paul Sanford (1845-1932)

English field marshal. He fought in the Boer War of 1899-1902 in South Africa and was appointed commander-in-chief of the eastern command in 1903 and general officer commander-in-chief of South Africa 1908-12. He was governor of Natal 1909-15 and governor of Malta 1915-19.

Methuen was born in Minehead, Somerset, and joined the Scots Guards in 1864. He took part in the Ashanti War of 1874 (in modern Ghana) and in the Egyptian war of 1882, to suppress the nationalist revolt. He commanded ‘Methuen's Horse’ in the Bechuanaland (modern Botswana) expedition of 1884-85. He was made field marshal in 1911.
