methylated spirit

Alcohol that has been rendered undrinkable, and is used for industrial purposes, as a fuel for spirit burners or a solvent.

Its consumption can lead to blindness and eventually death. One of the poisonous substances in it is methanol, or methyl alcohol, and this gives it its name. (The ‘alcohol’ of alcoholic drinks is ethanol.)

In her opinion, the cleaning essentials every household should have are bicarb soda, vinegar, methylated spirits, oil of cloves, lavender oil, lemon oil, teatree oil and pantyhose.
In the past Governments have had to legislate to prevent people, particularly teenagers and the vulnerable, drinking methylated spirits and inhaling solvents.
It seemed so complicated and such an extreme way to make a cup of tea that I'm sure some people will have thought it less stressful just to throw away the un-chilled milk, drink the methylated spirits and use the water in the kettle to put out any resulting fire.
