Meurthe-et-Moselle

Département in the Lorraine region of France; area 5,234 sq km/2,021 sq mi; population (1999 est) 713,800. The River Moselle and its tributaries, and the River Chiers, a tributary of the Meuse, flow through it. The main industries include the manufacture of cast and sheet iron, iron and steel goods, and pottery and glass. Rock salt is found in abundance. Cereals, potatoes, and hops are grown. The administrative centre is Nancy. Other important towns are Briey, Lunéville, and Toul.

Meurthe-et-Moselle was formed after a treaty with Germany in 1871 at the end of the Franco-Prussian War. It was made up from remnants of the départements of Meurthe and Moselle.
