Meuse

River flowing through France, Belgium, and the Netherlands; length 900 km/559 mi. It was an important line of battle in both world wars (see Meuse, Battles of the). It gives its name to a French département.

Meuse

Département in the Lorraine region of France; area 6,220 sq km/2,402 sq mi; population (2001 est) 192,500. The rivers Meuse, Orne, and Chiers flow through it. Cereals, potatoes, and beets are grown, and livestock are raised. The principal industries are brewing and the manufacture of glass and tiles. The chief towns are Bar-le-Duc (administrative centre) and Verdun.

Meuse is made up of parts of the former provinces of Champagne and Lorraine. There are two north–south ridges of highlands: the Côtes de Meuse form the watershed between the rivers Seine and Rhine; and the Argonne is covered with oak forests.
