Mexicali

City in northwestern Mexico, capital of Baja California state; population (2005) 653,000. It produces soap, vegetables, grapefruit, dates, alfalfa, cotton, and cottonseed oil. The availability of cheap labour attracts many US companies (Hughes Aerospace, Rockwell International, and others).

Mexicali is home to the Autonomous University of Baja California (1957).
