Meyer, Adolph (1866–1950)

Swiss-born US psychiatrist. As professor, and later director, he turned the Phipps Psychiatric Clinic at Johns Hopkins into the premier psychiatric training centre in the country (1910–41). One of the most important early psychiatrists in the USA, he developed new treatment methods, including the interview. He was an influential proponent of a holistic psychobiology. Meyer was born near Zürich, Switzerland, and emigrated to the USA in 1892.
