Meymaneh

Town in Faryab province, northwestern Afghanistan, lying at an altitude of 890 m/2,920 ft, to the north of the Turkestan Mountains; population (2001 est) 69,500. Though in a semi-arid region, Meymaneh serves as the commercial centre both for an agricultural area watered from the Qeysar River, producing cereals, cotton, and fruit, and for the livestock products, notably the wool of Karakul sheep, traded with nomads of more arid neighbouring areas.

Previously the capital of an Uzbek khanate, Meymaneh was officially allocated to Afghanistan in 1885 through a report of the Russo-Afghan boundary commission.
