Miass

City in the Chelyabinsk oblast (region) of the central Russian Federation, 90 km/56 mi southwest of Chelyabinsk on the Trans-Siberian Railway; population (1996 est) 167,000. It is located at the centre of a gold-mining area. Commercial vehicles have been manufactured in Miass since 1944. The city was founded in 1773 as a copper-smelting works, which closed in the 19th century.
