Michigan City

City and port in La Porte County, northwestern Indiana, 40 km/25 mi east-northeast of Gary; population (1990) 33,800. Situated amid sand dunes on the southern shore of Lake Michigan, the city is also a popular summer resort and yachting harbour.

Tourism is a major industry in Michigan City; visitors are attracted by its parks, gardens, theatres, and annual pageants. Sport fishing is a popular activity, from private and chartered boats. The city manufactures electronic components, steel products, cast-iron boilers, railway carriages, furniture and other wood products, air compressors, and chemicals. A state prison is also located here. West of the city lies the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.
