Michurinsk

City in the Tambov oblast (region) of the western Russian Federation, sited in the Don basin 65 km/40 mi northwest of Tambov; population (1996 est) 124,000. Michurinsk is a major railway junction. Industries include the manufacture of piston rings, foodstuffs, and textiles. Michurinsk is a centre for horticulture, with several research institutions. It was founded in 1636 as a fortress town in the Muscovite southern defence line.
