microsurgery

Part or all of an intricate surgical operation - rejoining a severed limb, for example - performed with the aid of a binocular microscope, using miniaturized instruments. Sewing of the nerves and blood vessels is done with a nylon thread so fine that it is only just visible to the naked eye.

The technique permits treatment of previously inaccessible lesions in the eye or brain.
