Middelburg

Industrial town and capital of Zeeland province, southwest Netherlands, on the island of Walcheren, 6 km/4 mi north of Vlissingen; population (1997) 44,700. There are engineering, tobacco, and furniture industries. The town hall dates from the 15th century and the abbey from the 12th century. It is a former member of the Hanseatic League.
