Middlesex

Former English county, absorbed by Greater London in 1965. It was settled in the 6th century by Saxons, and its name comes from its position between the kingdoms of the East and West Saxons.

Contained within the Thames basin, it provided good agricultural land before it was built over.

The name is still used, as in Middlesex County Cricket Club.
