Midgley, Mary (1919- )

English moral philosopher who used studies of animal behaviour (ethology) to support broadly Aristotelian ethics. She has also argued that our moral concern should extend to animals. In 2001, she published Science and Poetry.

Midgley taught at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne from 1963 until her retirement. Her publications include Beast and Man: The Roots of Human Nature 1978, Animals and Why They Matter 1983, and Wickedness: a Philosophical Enquiry 1984.
