Midi, Canal du

Canal in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France which connects the River Garonne with the Mediterranean; length 240 km/149 mi.

The canal was built in the late 17th century to allow the movement of shipping between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. Its narrow size means that today it is only used for barges. The main towns on the canal are Béziers, Carcassonne, Toulouse, and Castelnaudary.
