Midland Bank| Major UK retail bank, with about 1,600 branches nationwide. Founded in Birmingham in 1836, it took the name Midland Bank Ltd in 1923. In 1989 Midland launched First Direct, a pioneering telephone banking service available 24 hours a day. In 1992 HSBC Holdings gained full ownership of Midland (having taken a 14.9% equity interest in 1987) in one of the largest-ever banking acquisitions at that time. It was rebranded as HSBC Bank in 1999. |
