Midland Bank

Major UK retail bank, with about 1,600 branches nationwide. Founded in Birmingham in 1836, it took the name Midland Bank Ltd in 1923. In 1989 Midland launched First Direct, a pioneering telephone banking service available 24 hours a day. In 1992 HSBC Holdings gained full ownership of Midland (having taken a 14.9% equity interest in 1987) in one of the largest-ever banking acquisitions at that time. It was rebranded as HSBC Bank in 1999.
