Midleton, William St John Fremantle Brodrick

Midleton, William St John Fremantle Brodrick (1856–1942)

British politician. He became secretary of state for war in 1900 and for India in 1903. He was prominent in southern Irish politics, becoming leader of the Southern Unionists, a member of the Irish Convention 1917–18, and senator of the Irish Free State in 1921.

He was educated at Oxford and served as Conservative member of Parliament for West Surrey 1880–85 and for Guildford 1885–1906. He succeeded to the viscounty in 1907 and was created Earl of Midleton and Viscount Dunsford in 1921.
