Midwest City

City in Oklahoma County, central Oklahoma; population (1990) 52,300. Midwest City is a residential suburb 13 km/8 mi east of downtown Oklahoma City, just off Interstate 40 on the periphery of the conurbation.

The city was established in the early 1940s as a service centre for the newly built Tinker Air Force Base. This facility, which lies just to the south, remains important to its economy. Midwest City is the site of Oscar Rose State College (founded 1968).
