midwiferyAssistance of women in childbirth. Traditionally, it was undertaken by experienced specialists; in modern medical training it is a nursing speciality for practitioners called midwives. (See also obstetrics.) The English physician William Harvey's 1653 work on generation contained an influential chapter on labour. Dr Peter Chamberlen II (1560-1631) made an important contribution to midwifery, particularly with his development of the first midwifery forceps. |
