Miereveld, Michiel Janzoon van

    0.24 sec.

Miereveld (or Mierevelt), Michiel Janzoon van (1567-1641)

Dutch painter. He became court painter to the House of Orange, producing a large number of carefully finished portraits, among them Lord Vere of Tilbury and Elizabeth, Queen of Bohemia (National Portrait Gallery, London).

Miereveld was born in Delft. He gave up history painting to concentrate on portraiture. His works have an aristocratic air well suited to court portraits, but are rather stiff and lifeless, representing a stage before the influence of Anthony van Dyck was felt.
