mifepristoneAnti-progesterone drug used, in combination with a prostaglandin, to procure early abortion (up to the tenth week in pregnancy). It is administered only in hospitals or recognized clinics and a success rate of 95% is claimed. It was developed and first used in France in 1989. It was licensed in the UK in 1991, and became available in the USA from October 2000. Clinical studies reported in 2000 indicate that daily low doses of mifepristone can serve as a contraceptive, as they suppress ovulation. How to thank TFD for its existence?
