Jelgava

Town in western Latvia, an inland port on the Lielupe River, 48 km/30 mi southwest of Riga; population (1996) 70,900. Industries include textile manufacture and sugar-refining. The town was founded in 1265 by the Teutonic Knights, and became the capital of the former duchy of Courland in 1561.
