Mikrokosmos

A set of 153 small piano pieces by Bartók, arranged in progressive order of technical difficulty and published in six volumes, setting the player various problems of modern technique, each piece being written on a particular principle or system (special rhythms, time-signatures, chords, intervals, atonal or bitonal combinations), composed 1926–37 and published in 1940.
