Milan I (1854-1901)

Prince of Serbia 1868-82 and king of Serbia 1882-89. In 1876 he allied himself with Russia, and declared war against Turkey, winning the independence of Serbia and the royal title for himself in 1882. His pro-Austrian policy made him unpopular and in 1889 he abdicated in favour of his son, Alexander.

Milan was born in Jassy, Romania. On the assassination of his cousin Michael Obrenovich in 1868, he was proclaimed prince and ruled under a regent till he came of age in 1872.
