Mildura

City in northwest Victoria, Australia, 559 km/347 mi northwest of Melbourne and 430 km/267 mi northwest of Adelaide; population (1996) 24,142. Mildura is situated on the River Murray, on the border with New South Wales, in a citrus fruit- and vine-growing district which is dependent on irrigation. Industries include sawmilling, food processing, and the production of wine, olive oil, and soft drinks. The rapidly expanding tourist industry is also important.

La Trobe University has a regional campus at Mildura. The Murray Sunset, Victoria's second-largest national park, is nearby, and the area surrounding and including Mildura is known as Sunraysia. Mildura was named after the colour of the soil in the area, Mildura being an Aboriginal word meaning ‘red rock’.
