Milford

Industrial city in New Haven County, southwest Connecticut, situated by the Housatonic River and Long Island Sound, 15 km/9 mi west of New Haven; population (1990) 49,900. Industries include the manufacture of fabricated metal, razors, machine tools, writing pens, and electronics.

Milford was settled in 1639 as part of New Haven Colony, and was a popular summer resort until the 1920s; it was incorporated as a city in 1959. Milford has a fine natural harbour on Long Island Sound and was a major oystering centre from the mid 19th century until pollution ruined the business late in the 20th century.

Previous to this, the earliest-known use of the phrase occurred in the pamphlet, "Ye Slaves," written by George Milford and published in December, 1912.
The sexton stood in the porch of Milford meeting-house, pulling busily at the bell-rope.
