Milford Sound

This photo clearly shows the precipitous sides of the narrow inlet Milford Sound. Milford Sound is part of the Fiordland National Park, New Zealand.

Fjord on the southwest coast of South Island, New Zealand, extending for 16 km/10 mi inland and about 2 km/1.2 mi in width, with a maximum depth of 350 m/1,150 ft. It has numerous waterfalls, including Sutherland Falls, and Mitre Peak is nearby. The settlement of Milford at the head of the fjord has been a tourist base since the 1890s.
