Mulhouse

Industrial city in the Haut-Rhin département of Alsace, eastern France, situated 35 km/22 mi south of Colmar on the River Ill and the Rhine-Rhône Canal; population (1999) 110,100. Its main industries include textiles, engineering, and electrical goods.

Features

There is a workers' garden suburb, founded by Mayor Dolfus in 1853. Southeast of the town is an extensive zoological garden, and in the southwest is a large educational and research complex, including a university.

History

Founded in 803, it was made a free city in the 13th century, joined the Swiss confederation in 1515, turned into an independent republic in 1648, and voluntarily became French in 1798. It became part of the German Empire in 1871 after the Franco-Prussian War, but was returned to France in 1918.
