Milledgeville

City and seat of Baldwin County, in central Georgia, on the Oconee River at the Fall Line, 35 km/22 mi northeast of Macon; population (2000) 18,800. From its foundation in 1803, Milledgeville was the capital of Georgia until 1868.

Milledgeville was an early stagecoach centre and, from the 1850s onwards, became a railway hub. Landmarks include the Old Governor's Mansion and the Old State Capitol. Among the products manufactured here are building materials (made from local clays), mobile homes, pharmaceuticals, and textiles. The city is the site of Georgia Military College (founded 1879) and Georgia College (founded 1889). The writer Flannery O'Connor lived and died in Milledgeville.
