Millennium Commission

UK organization set up in 1993 that receives money from the National Lottery, and gives it to projects and awards to mark the millennium and beyond. Money goes towards capital projects, to smaller community projects, and to the Millennium Experience Festival, of which the New Millennium Experience at Greenwich is the centrepiece. The Commission is chaired by Chris Smith, secretary of state for culture, media, and sport.

Capital projects funded by the Commission include: rebuilding of Cardiff Arms Park stadium; further development of Portsmouth docks as a maritime museum; development work in Sheffield city centre; the Eden project in Cornwall; and reopening the Forth and Clyde Canal and the Union Canal, to link Glasgow and Edinburgh.
