Millom

Town in Cumbria, England, 35 km/22 mi from Barrow-in-Furness; population (2001) 1,650. It grew up as an iron-smelting centre, using locally available haematite ores as raw material. When this ceased, other industries, including tanning and clothing manufacture, took over. Current industries include tourism. Millom has a 14th-century castle, and a church, part of which dates from the 12th century.
