Mills, Charles (1914–1982)

US composer. He studied with a six-year scholarship under Copland, Sessions, and Roy Harris, two years with each, and later devoted himself entirely to composition.

Orchestral

5 symphonies (1940–80), slow movement for string orchestra; concertino for flute and orchestra, prelude for flute and strings.

Vocal

Festival Overture for chorus and orchestra; Ars poetica for unaccompanied chorus (1940).

Chamber

chamber symphony for 11 instruments (1939), chamber concerto for 10 instruments, chamber concertino for woodwind quintet, 5 string quartets (1939–59), piano trio in D minor, sonatas for cello, violin, and piano.
