Milner, Anthony

Milner, Anthony (1925– )

English composer. He taught at Morley College, London, 1947–62, and was then appointed to the Royal College of Music. He was appointed lecturer at King's College, London, in 1965.

He studied piano with Herbert Fryer (1877–1957) and composition with R O Morris and later with Mátyás Seiber.

Works

Orchestral

three symphonies (1972, 1978, 1986), Sinfonia Pasquale for string orchestra, April Prologue for orchestra; chamber symphony (1968), concerto for symphonic wind band (1979), concerto for strings (1982); The Song of Akhenaten for soprano and chamber orchestra (1954).

Church music

canatas Salutatio Angelica (1948), The City of Desolation (1955), St Francis, The Water and the Fire (1961), Emmanuel Cantata (1975); Mass for a cappella chorus (1951).

Chamber

string quartet (1975), oboe quartet, wind quintet; songs; piano sonata (1989).
