Milpitas

City in Santa Clara County, north-central California, located just southeast of San Francisco Bay, and 11 km/7 mi north of San Jose; population (1990) 50,700.

Milpitas is situated in a farming area (the name means ‘little fields’), but also houses a large car assembly plant, and has become an important part of California's Silicon Valley, manufacturing computer software and chips and other high-tech products. The city was incorporated in 1954.
