Milton

Opera by Spontini (libretto by V J E de Jouy and M Dieulafoy), produced at the Opéra-Comique, Paris, on 27 November 1804. A second Milton was planned by Spontini in 1838, when he visited England in the summer to study the environment. It was to be entitled Miltons Tod und Busse für den Königsmord/Milton's Death and Expiation for the King's Murder) (libretto by E Raupach), but turned into Das verlorene Paradies/Paradise Lost); it remained unfinished.

Milton

Town in Norfolk County, eastern Massachusetts; population (2000 est) 26,100. Milton lies on the Neponset River opposite Mattapan, and 13 km/8 mi south of downtown Boston. It is a wealthy suburb of Boston, with some light industry. It was first settled in 1634 (although the town seal has 1640), and incorporated in 1662.

The town is named after Milton in Dorset, England. During the 18th century, it was a mill town and manufacturing centre. There was a powder mill founded in 1674, a chocolate factory in 1764, and the first piano factory in the USA in 1800. The first public health drive in the USA was Milton's smallpox inoculation campaign of 1809.

There are 23 entries on the national register of historic places, and in Suffolk Resolves House in 1774, a list of grievances against the English king was drawn up, one of the first formal protests of the American Revolution. Milton is home to Milton Academy, several other preparatory schools, and two colleges. The Blue Hill reservation is situated immediately south of the town. Former US president George Bush was born in Milton.

Milton

Town and seat of Halton Regional Municipality, southern Ontario, 29 km/18 mi north of Hamilton; population (1991) 32,100. The area was opened to European settlement with the sale of land by the Mississauga people in the early 1800s. Traditionally agricultural, the town is becoming increasingly suburban and has some light manufacturing.
