Milwaukee County

Administrative district of southwestern Wisconsin; area 624 sq km/241 sq mi, population (1990) 959,300. Milwaukee County is bordered on the east by Lake Michigan and traversed by the Milwaukee River. It is the most urbanized county in the state and has its seat at Milwaukee.

The county is dominated by the city of Milwaukee, which has annexed much land, but there are still a number of independent suburbs, such as Whitefish Bay, Shorewood, Wauwatosa, West Allis, Oak Creek, and South Milwaukee.
