mind mapping

Method for relating thought processes graphically. Mind mapping is a technique developed in the 1960s by US academic Tony Buzan, following his research into note-taking techniques of students. The technique involves harnessing words, images, numbers, colours, and spatial awareness to represent thoughts. Mind maps resemble unstructured, brightly coloured flow diagrams with pictures.

Guiding principles to creating a mind map include: start in the centre of the sheet of paper with at least three colours; use images, symbols, codes, and dimensions throughout; each word or image must be alone and sitting on its own line; lines must be connected starting as thick lines at the centre and becoming thinner as they radiate outwards; and use emphasis and show associations. A mind map can be used to give an overview of a large subject, to enable route planning of concepts, and to promote creative thinking by highlighting new creative pathways.
