Mindoro Occidental

Province of western Mindoro Island in the Philippines; area 5,879 sq km/2,270 sq mi; population (1995) 337,000. The capital is Mamburao. The province is mountainous, with rolling prairies in the coastal region. The economy is mainly agricultural, with rice, corn, and coconuts being grown. There are rich fishing grounds off the coast. Salt, sand, and gravel are produced, and there is some oil prospecting in the south.

The province is home to the Mangyan people.
